Hyperion: actually helping the Earth Day cause

Hyperion employees did more good than environmentalists yesterday!

While "protesters" held signs outside of the Hyperion office in Elk Point, Hyperion employees weren't there. What were they doing? They were picking up trash on rural roads.
---
"The Hyperion office door was locked and the blinds were drawn Tuesday. The company said the office was closed in observance of Earth Day so employees could pick up trash along rural roads in the county."
---
All of those protesters were using paper signs...killing trees. They used markers to write on the signs...releasing deadly chemicals into the air. Jeez, it seems like they're doing more harm than good!

It just goes to show us that Earth Day is really just a way for environmental activists to foward their political agenda.

Douglas wrong on Hyperion

In a recent post on his blog, Douglas Bryenldson posted pictures of the recent explosion of the Big Springs Oil Refinery in Big Springs, Texas.

He stated, "The following images could very well be a vision from the future of the forthcoming HYPERION OIL REFINERY in Elk Point, SD. Can you imagine the environmental damage such a disaster would cause to the air, ground and water between Sioux City, Elk Point, Vermillion - even as far north as Beresford and Sioux Falls?"

Of course, Douglas' statement that the Big Springs explosion could be a "vision from the future" is not based in reality. Heck, even the pictures he posted were from the website of a radio show dedicated to conspiracy theories and science fiction!

What Douglas failed to tell his readers is that the Big Springs refinery over 75 years old, having been constructed in 1928. It has been renovated over the years, but does not carry the most current technology. The Hyperion refinery would be the technologically advanced refinery in the nation. Douglas seems to conveniently forget this.

In the future, I hope that the senseless attacks on this potential economic boon for the area be based on reason, rather than petty assumptions.

Hyperion measure defeated

At a politically charged SGA meeting tonight, the Senate voted down a measure stating that SGA would publicly declare an anti-Hyperion refinery stance.
-
We College Republicans were extremely pleased at the outcome, and feel SGA made the right decision. This is not because we, as an organization, were officially pro- or anti- Hyperion, but because we don't feel SGA has the authority to vote on such issues.
-
College Republicans President Drew Peterson spoke, as did Ryan Budmayer, Tim Carr, and myself.
-
We are also pleased at the turnout- both for and against the proposal- and we thank and applaud the USD Democrats as well as others for their impassioned input and debate.

China is a bigger environmental threat than Hyperion

Maybe instead of trying to halt economic development, the Left of South Dakota should be concerned about China! http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSSP33153420071130?feedType=RSS&feedName=environmentNews&rpc=22&sp=true
-
"Beijing is reluctant to set itself international targets to fight climate change without financial assistance from industrialized countries, a senior climate change official, Gao Guangsheng, said on Thursday."
-
"China had overtaken the United States as the world's top carbon emitter, or would do so shortly, because Beijing had insufficient data to prove that one way or the other."
