Anti-Catholicism: My answer to Douglas
Here's my answer to Douglas Bryenldson and his recent hateful remarks about Catholics.
They got me thinking about all of the recent anti-Catholicism I've heard recently.
The one thing that got me the most was Douglas' extremely ignorant claim that the Catholic Church is a "cult of infallibility." Fortunately, I clear that misconception up in the article.
---
"One of the more misinformed comments I hear is that the Pope is totally infallible, and we Catholics think he can never be wrong. The blog comment called it the "cult of infallibility." Well, Catholics do believe the pope is infallible, but not all the time. You see, infallibility has only been around since 1870, when the Church officially defined it, and the Pope can only use it to make decisions regarding official Church doctrine or beliefs. The Pope rarely uses this power. In fact, he's only used it once. The only time infallibility was invoked was in 1950, when Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of Mary an article of faith. That sure doesn't sound like a cult to me."
---
Like I say in the column, expressing your opinion is fine, but please make it an informed opinion.
Take a gander at the article, especially if you've got reservations about the Catholic Church.

I have to say, I agree that there is a lot of anti-Catholicism around. And I just read the comments on your article in the Volante, ouch. I am also Catholic, and though I'm not particularly Republican nor do I particularly like you, I feel it's necessary to show support I guess.
We shouldn't have to tolerate having to defend our religion when nobody else has to defend theirs.

Who cares if you don't like me?
I probably don't like you either.
This is about the common courtesy to inform ones self before making value judgements.

If you can't stand the HEAT - get out of the kitchen Matt. I hope you don't plan a career in politics because your 'oh poor little ol' me' routine won't get you far in the TOUGH and TUMBLE real world of heated words and fierce debate.
You're still young - so you can stand on your naivety and whimper and act all battered and abused by my factually backed personal opinions - but you certainly don't demonstrate any kind of leadership qualities or personal integrity.
Having my comments DELETED by you is a FAR worse atrocity than me simply presenting my individual opinions.
Everything I stated is a historical FACT - in fact, John Paul II admitted EVERYTHING I said and begged the World for forgiveness for all the horrible atrocities the Catholic Church committed in the name of Jesus Christ.

If you don't like the TRUTH - then just say it - but don't try to play the pathetic victim role - it's shallow and it's transparent to anyone with any intelligence and depth.
Like I said - if you can't stand the HEAT of the KITCHEN of DEBATE and OPPOSING OPINIONS - then retire from the arena and find another, less distressing avenue of expressing yourself like pottery or basket weaving.
No offense - but I expected a lot more from a fellow USD college student than petty whimpering and self-pity-mongering.
You can attempt to vilify me personally by making such a 'fuss' over your hurt feelings - but all I did was remind you of some historical facts. Get used to it because FACTS trump WHIMPERING.
(If you censor this comment I will only repost it on my blog so go ahead and DELETE all you want Matt.)

Use all caps all you want, Douglas. I won't entertain that kind of ignorant hate on this blog.
I don't have any obligation to subject myself or readers to ignorance of that magnitude.
You're just upset because someone finally called you on your hypocrisy: you preach equality, but are absolutely intolerant of others.
