Bill Mahr...still an idiot

It's oh-so-cool for young politically involved people to praise Bill Mahr for his cutting-edge political commentary. Unfortunately, most of them don't see through the fact that he's a jackass who rarely makes an effort to learn facts.

In a recent rant, Bill Mahr said some very hateful things about Pope Benedict XVI.
---
Maher, 52, host of "Real Time with Bill Maher," has come under attacks from Catholics since going on a rant last Friday about Pope Benedict's visit to America.

"Whenever a cult leader sets himself up as God's infallible wing man here on Earth, lock away the kids," said Maher, comparing the Catholic Church to the polygamist cult authorities raided in Texas last week.

"I'd like to tip off law enforcement to an even larger child-abusing religious cult," Maher said. "Its leader also has a compound, and this guy not only operates outside the bounds of the law, but he used to be a Nazi and he wears funny hats."
---
As a Roman Catholic, this bugs the hell out of me. His rant has absolutely no basis in fact and wouldn't fly if it were aimed at any other religious leader. Mahr needs to apologize. NOW.

Comments:

I have deleted the comments of Douglas, as they were extremely hateful and not based in truth.

The Pope is only infallible when he speaks "ex cathedra." Only those who have done their research would know this. Douglas had obviously not done his research- his comments were filled with bigotry and ignorance.

If he has more thoughtful comments, they may be posted.

Matt, you are nothing but a FASCIST.

I hope you are never allowed to run for any kind of political office because we now know what kind of government you would enforce - one in which ideas and opinions that you don't happen to agree with are censored and deleted.

You Mr. Hittle are a hypocrite and a FASCIST.

Enjoy your victory over Democracy, free speech and diversity of ideas and opinions.

I see it is not just the Pope who is irrelevant - it is you as well.

i didn't get to see mr. bryelndsons comments becasue they were censored but i would say he must have struck a chord of inconvenient truth to make some one delete them instead of even attempt to refute them.Since we can't now see what he wrote,we can only assume he was right on.Censorship is definetly not the american way but it does seem to be the republican way.

Banter on, but I simply don't care what you're saying. I reserve the right to censor hateful and ignorant comments; Douglas' comments filled both of those requirements.

Simply, I deleted Douglas' comments because they were hate-filled and only forwarded age-old anti-Catholic rhetoric. In fact, Douglas joins the ranks of the KKK, other white supremacist groups, Nazis, communists, and other radical groups in his denunciation of Catholics.

As you can see, he has taken the time to call me names, rather than taken the time to do his research. Unfortunately, this is par for the course in Douglas' writings.

He is still free to post, as long as his comments are based in fact.

I, too, am a Catholic and found the actions of our current pontiff and the late John Paul II during the child-abuse scandal to be extremely disquieting.

If you don't think Maher's commentary was rooted in fact, you would do well to read this post by Andrew Sullivan:

Also, spare me the "fake outrage", to borrow a term coined by the inimitable Bill Maher. Heh.
