Hyperion measure defeated
At a politically charged SGA meeting tonight, the Senate voted down a measure stating that SGA would publicly declare an anti-Hyperion refinery stance.
-
We College Republicans were extremely pleased at the outcome, and feel SGA made the right decision. This is not because we, as an organization, were officially pro- or anti- Hyperion, but because we don't feel SGA has the authority to vote on such issues.
-
College Republicans President Drew Peterson spoke, as did Ryan Budmayer, Tim Carr, and myself.
-
We are also pleased at the turnout- both for and against the proposal- and we thank and applaud the USD Democrats as well as others for their impassioned input and debate.

Wasn't too hard for them to vote it down considering they didn't even listen to the merits and demerits of the refinery before voting on it.

I guess the key to winning a debate is claim you are unprepared when your opposition is and you win.

Again, we're glad that Bill and Chris came to the meeting, as well as all of the supporters and opponents of the proposal.
We're all fortunate that the quality of debate between the Dems and Repubs is such that we can vehemently disagree, yet still be civil to each other.
I personally commend the College Democrats for their passion, and I know that they'd show the same respect if the outcome had been in their favor.
