Letter in the Sioux City Journal
There was an excellent letter to the editor today in the Sioux City Journal, if I may say so myself.

Matt -
You have NO IDEA what it's like to be poor - so poor that you can't afford health insurance - trying to raise your children and keep them as healthy as can be because you love them SO much - and then have one child develop serious health complications which requires multiple visits and procedures and prescriptions which starts to cost tens of thousands of dollars per month for several months. Parents are then forced to have beg for help from friends, community, charities, anywhere they can get the money to help pay for the cost of their beautiful child's illness - and then ontop of that indignity of having to beg - to LOSE that child to the illness and STILL have to deal with the hundreds of thousands of dollars of accumulated medical costs through a harsh collection/payment system for the next thirty to fifty years of your life.
It's about the blackest, meanest, most cruel, inhuman thing that can happen to a young couple just starting out in their lives - and yet it does happen quite often all because of this insane notion that healthcare should be a lucrative business industry rather than a basic HUMAN right and fundamental benefit of belonging to the fabric of a CIVILIZED SOCIETY.
Human wellbeing... human health should NOT be considered a BUSINESS... subject to BUSINESS theories and BUSINESS rules... healthcare is something a civilized society should PROVIDES for FREE as a FUNDAMENTAL necessity... it's the WHOLE point of working together to form a society in the first place!
Why even unite into societies if the society as a whole doesn't even care about the welfare of each individual memeber of that society?
Civilization and Society means we as a collective take care of each other - to use the common wealth we can generate to insure that every member of the constituency has at LEAST this (health) basic need met.
It's such a no brainer that I can't FATHOM how healthcare got turned into a BUSINESS industry and not a PUBLIC SERVICE GUARANTEED to ALL CITIZENS as a BENEFIT of BELONGING!!!
No wonder people don't trust or like the government or feel pride in their nation anymore - the Nation needs to PROVIDE and meet these BASIC needs in order for people to feel invested in and cared for by and thankful for THEIR nation - their culture and their civilization.
Can you imagine HOW MANY of America's problems will simply vanish when Universal Citizen HealthCare is established?
Just IMAGINE!

My goodness.
Douglas, how do you know that I have no idea what it's like to be poor? Do you know me that well?
To be sure, it sounds great to say that we will help the poor by socializing industries. Unfortunately, the reality is that socialization DOES NOT WORK.
Furthermore, health care is not a right. You are operating under that misguided assumption.
I recommend you to the writings of Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand. That will set you straight.

Oh my GOD... Ayn Rand? Have you played BIOSHOCK on the PC or X-Box 360? Atlas more than shrugged... he went nuts!
You have been thoroughly indocrinated into your belief system, haven't you? But that's not your fault. There's still hope that you will see through these intellectual illusions and apprehend the what lies beyond the veil.
Have you ever read "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse?

Indoctrinated? Hardly. I spent lots of time researching my current system of political beliefs. I don't base my political beliefs on video games. I bet you've not read Atlas Shrugged. It is a fascinating book, and John Galt is my literary hero.
I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that you've never read one word of Ayn Rand. If this is the case, 1) you've got no right to criticize; 2) pick up "The Virtue of Greed."
Finally, no, I've not read that book.
