Tonight's Republican/Democrat debate
I'm stealing away from my TV during the first commercial break of the ABC Democrat debate to discuss a bit from the Republican side.
I thought the Republican debate was much more interesting than the Democratic debate has been so far. Romney was the target as McCain, Huckabee, and Guiliani all boarded the "bash Romney" bandwagon. The heated exchanges made for excellent television, and I enjoyed oohing and awing with the audience as hot one-liners were fired in all directions.
I liked what Romney had to say about the free market- it was spot-on. Of course, Guiliani mentioned 9/11 about 10 times.
With regard to the Democratic debate- so far- nearly every answer has decried the Bush administration. This should be expected, as it's a Democratic debate. However, with candidates claiming they represent "change," it's interesting that they keep harping on what came before- I thought change focused on the future.
Finally, the Democrats are still deeply entrenched in the populist, statist views previously forwarded mainly by trade unions and socialists. They need to understand that problems like education and health care won't be fixed by money. They also need to understand that the free market is the best system, and if they simply let it work, their aims would be almost wholly met.
Possibly more after the Democratic debate
