This exhibit is a series of photographs which examine the signs placed at the
scene of fatal vehicular crashes in South Dakota. The series examines the
spiritual and emotional impact of these accidents.
In South Dakota, the Department of Transportation places a standard road sign at
each site. These "Think" signs seem ubiquitous as one drives along the highways
in our state. However, just as the lives these signs represent are individual
and unique, the signs themselves have defining characteristics. The "Think"
signs may lean differently. Letters on the sign have worn away. Decals adorn
the sign. Thus, as in life, the seasons pass and the signs weather and change
with this passage of time.
These photos you see here were taken with a medium format Holga camera using
film. The development and delay that is the process of photography seemed
appropriate for a series which examines a process of life and loss that cannot
be approached simply or quickly. The initial series of images for this series
was done digitally as a master database of images that were then re-imaged with
film.
Thank you for viewing this exhibit and thinking about these signs with me. To read more about Judith Peterson's photography, please visit her website www.judithrpetersonphotography.com
