FDR, the New Deal and the Recession

07:13PM Mar 25, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

Every week in the Volante, Hittle or Carr, the most vocal College Republicans on campus, continually claim that Democrats want nothing less than a socialist state and they point to no other man than the great FDR as the man who pulled the trigger, so when I read the opening line of this article I knew I was going to talk about:

In Defense of Johnson

09:33PM Mar 09, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

As we await for Kirby's imminent announcement tomorrow morning, South
Dakotans from all different walks of life have stood up to defend him
in this campaign. It is particularly disappointing to see Democratic
bloggers like SD watch and Badlands Blue rise in defense of Kirby.  In
case you are not aware, the DSCC and the Johnson campaign has not
wasted anytime in letting voters
know who Steve Kirby actually is. For discretions sake, I actually did
not get to view the website that "attacks" Steve Kirby for his
questionable business practices but I got the gist of it from the
newspapers and blogs.

Clinton and the "dream" ticket

05:36PM Mar 08, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

Recently, the Clinton campaign has been touting the possibility of a Clinton-Obama "dream" ticket. Hillary recently said she would support such a ticket on CBSNews and Bill recently said:

"I know that she has always been open to it, because she believes that
if you can unite the energy and the new people that he's brought in and
the people in these vast swaths of small town and rural America that
she's carried overwhelmingly, if you had those two things together she
thinks it'd be hard to beat."

Initially, I was shocked that the Clinton campaign would want to circulate such an idea especially as they attack Obama at what seems like every opportunity.  After a couple of days though, this strategy employed by Clinton makes a lot of sense.  It is well documented that many undecideds who lean towards Obama believe that he is a strong candidate but a bit inexperienced. This argument for a dream ticket is directed at them. If Clinton can get these voters to think that Obama will be on the ticket as the Vice President, it satisfies their fears of his inexperience while still giving them hope that Obama will one day be President...with further training. I personally think that this argument will not resonate with these undecided voters.  The Obama campaign is well-organized and they will be more likely to reach these voters on the ground level which empirically gets the most votes. I could be wrong though. I have been before and with this election cycle, anything can happen.

Obama is claiming Texas

01:34PM Mar 07, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

In case you have not seen it yet, Obama's frontpage displays every state he has carried. Texas makes the list despite only 41% of Texas caucus precincts reporting and losing the
Texas primaries. With the current caucus trends, he should end up with more delegates out of the state, but still, I think they are jumping the gun a little bit here.  In terms of momentum and who looked better this Tuesday, Senator Clinton won Texas in my mind even if he does end up with more delegates. If you would have asked me two weeks ago who was going to win Texas, I would have said Obama without question. He had all of the momentum and the lone star state really seemed to take with his outsider message.  The fact that he narrowly lost the primaries says a lot about Clinton's efforts in TX. I am surprised the Clinton campaign has not said anything about this yet.

Double Down or Dissolve: An Insider's Perspective to Fix SGA

06:58PM Mar 06, 2008 in category General by Tetris

I am a 2 term SGA senator and have been rather dismayed at the organization since the day I was elected. I've seen it all-- impeachment, apathetic senators, long amounts of time spent on pointless issues, arguing, fraud and more impeachment. Something is dysfunctional at SGA, but what is it? Is it the people in SGA? Something in the water? Or something more fundamental? Join me for an insider's perspective.

The Brandeis Model Part 1

05:22PM Mar 06, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

Today, we look at a possible solution to our student government crisis.  While this option is drastic, I believe it is the only avenue we can take.  SGA has lost all of its credibility and it will be hard to get it back.

SGA cannot do anything right

10:07PM Mar 05, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

First, they screw up the election.

Now, Senators are resigning.

I use to laugh at SGA but now I am just embarrassed. They need to null and void this election and dissolve themselves (seriously, they cannot do anything now).  Tomorrow, I will post what I think is the solution to our student government problem - The Brandeis Model.

Clinton's Candidacy: Good or Bad?

02:58PM Mar 05, 2008 in category General by Tetris

After much speculation that Hillary would drop out of the race if she had a poor showing on March 4th, it looks like she's in for the long haul-- at least until Pennsylvania, and possibly until Puerto Rico or the convention itself. But her path to the nomination is narrow and potentially destructive. Here are some thoughts on her presence in the race from a strong Obama supporter.

The Experience Debate

02:13PM Mar 05, 2008 in category root by RCDEM

Senator Clinton and the Republican Party have been trying to paint Senator Obama as an inexperienced leader who will be unable to handle the Presidency.  These attacks did not stick until Obama made his first major gaffe on the campaign trail this week. Tim Carr, member of the College Republicans, makes similar shrieks in his recent op-ed piece in the Volante.  I dissect in bold italics. Someone please tell me if they do not like this format of response. I find it easier but if it is annoying, I can stop.

Tonight was a good night

12:28AM Mar 05, 2008 in category General by RCDEM

Tonight was a good night for the USD Dem's blog. It was good to see all of the bloggers back and in top form!  We really covered this thing well.  Nice work everybody!

According to google tracker, tonight was also the highest hit count we have had this semester. We had 375 page views which is pretty good in my opinion.  It is not a very large number but we are a small, local blog that is growing. Another great thing is that over 50% of our visitors were new.

I thought I would share these numbers. Let's keep it up!

Getting' Drunk

08:54PM Mar 04, 2008 in category General by Tetris

Here's the final game we settled on:

1. Obama wins a state, chug a beer. If he wins by double digits, do two.

2. Every time they say "3AM" or "Red Phone" take 3 drinks.

3. Every time Clinton says "experience," Obama says "yes we can" or McCain says "friends," take 5.

4. Every time you hear "change you can Xerox" or "reject and renounce" finish your drink.

5. Every time they talk about Hillary dropping out, finish your drink.

6. Take 1 drink when you hear latinos, blacks, momentum, super delegates, young, or elderly.

UPDATE: Thank you McCain, my friend, for getting me wasted.
