Live Blogging of the Returns tonight

8pm CST:

Congratulations John McCain, you are now the Republican candidate according to CNN.com. Also, to the Republican Party, thank you, it is our dream to go against a pro-war candidate who is older than dirt.

Also the Dems are up in the air, but I'm thinking that Hillary is not going to like the outcomes of tonight. Vermont to Obama, Obama in lead in Texas and Ohio way to close to call either way.

Plus, is anyone besides me hoping both parties end up with a candidate tonight so then the election coverage can finally stop, all the major news networks are running out of things to talk about.

8:07 CST

How amazing is this....RI is too close to call.....this is a victory for Obama, if he can hold close in OH, TX and RI the nomination is his and Hillary should drop out tomorrow. These were all states a few weeks ago he was supposed to lose big in, and going by the proportional system the Dems use, she almost could not win as a CNN analyst illustrated earlier in the night. GO OBAMA!

8:20 CST

Mike Huckabee concedes both the March 4th primary as well as the presidential race. A much better speech than the generic Bush-speak of Romney's concession speech.

8:31 CST

CNN is calling the Rhode Island race for Hillary Clinton.  Obama's streak is over...everyone take a drink.

8:45 pm

CNN is now telling us the ways Obama will lose the election, so much for the Obama bias Hillary is talking about.

8:48 pm

McCain is giving his victory speech. Look at his wife's eyes...she just looks really evil and scary tonight. My roommate Pete agrees. Let the attack ads begin from both sides. I expect to see the first by the end of the week. This isn't a bad speech, but he needs to stop spreading fear and expressing subtly that if we don't vote for him Al Queda will take over. Glad to see his point about destroying Hussein's regime got a huge round of applause.

8:53 pm

He just said we need to stabilize the entire Middle East, good luck with that Senator McCain, it's not like they have been trying for decades, oh wait...nevermind.

8:56pm

Well it finally happened he hit the ultimate problem in the Republican Party, we must cut taxes in the United States, but continue the war. As we can tell right now it really does good for the economy. How good does the Euro or Canadian dollar look right now.

8:57 pm

At least he supports alternative energy. Plus one for him.

9:01 pm

He just declared that the contest begins tonight,
and we as Democrats are welcoming this challenge, do you think McCain
will turn the White House into a retirement home for his friends?

9:07pm

Good news for the Democratic Party in Texas, CNN just
reported some in some instances people in Texas were turned away from
the caucuses due to violations of the fire code, or another precinct
had 50 ballots and 300 people showed up. This is a great sign for the
Democratic party.

10:08pm

CNN has declared Ohio for Hillary.  This race is going
to go on for another couple of months. I want it to keep going but I
want it to end after Pennsylvania. Hopefully, both sides will say PA is
the last showdown/most important state and we can move on from there.
Otherwise, I think two more months of this press helps us as long as we
stay nice.

Comments:

Americans will have an important choice in November: vote for America's first minority president or vote for America's oldest president.

I don't think race should really come into play in someone's voting decision, but its an interesting way to frame the election nonetheless.

The Republican party: the party of old crusty white millionaire dudes.

I am not going to lie. I am going to miss Mike Huckabee. I do not agree with anything he says but the dude was fun to watch.

McCain is bad behind the podium and it shows tonight. I am nodding off while he speaks and I'm not 87! I wonder how hard it is for him to stay awake.

Bill,
put your latest update in the summary box.

I just looked at the exit polls for TX and things look good for Obama. The youth vote made up 16% of the vote in Texas.

Posted by RCDEM on March 04, 2008 at 09:05 PM CST #

that is good to hear but also don't forget in Ohio the big cities haven't rolled in yet so don't count him out.

After the NAFTA scandal, I don't think he can win Ohio. I actually want it to go a little longer. Every time we have an election, the media gets to report all excited Dems are about our candidates.

I agree. Plus, we need to bring them all to South Dakota--only 4 months away guys! it's practically right around the corner ;)

First of all, what was up with McCain playing Johnny B Good????? YOURE SO OLD.

Second of all, I hope Obama just wins already! I don't want it to go to South Dakota. Clinton is playing DIRTY and I don't want Obama all soiled up for the general.

Although I really don't expect it to go all the way to SD, I think the prolonged primary is great for Democrats. It gives us a chance to contact potential supporters and maybe bring out people who normally would be written off as Republican. Clearly, the turn out shows just how influencial these two candidates have been for the party. Why not organize a few more states. Now, that being said, we definately do not want negative ads because they definately do not help build the party.

Oy, August here we come.

I'm a Republican, and I'm neither white nor a millionaire.

If you're looking for millionaires, take a gander at your Democratic candidates.

Yeah, and Matthew has the added bonus of also being non-crusty.

Obviously, "frame the election" means everyone in the party falls into the same category, and not the candidates themselves.
